When Blue Taxi Becomes Angry Bird #BicaraPR

1
Dok:Selasar.com

Various tweets strike the heart of the blue taxi. “RIP @B***birdgroup yg sudah bunuh diri hari ini! Goodbye dari kami, mantan pelanggan kalian! #SayNoToB***Bird”, tweets Sridewi Ekawati owner of @maniakania account. “Selamat @B***birdgroup demo hari ini sukses bikin penumpang beralih ke taksi online :’)”, says SEMBILANPULUH through @mamoamoamo.

They who called themselves the loyal consumer of the blue taxi were disappointed after the demonstration done in the name of Land Transport Driver Association (PPAD) at various points in Jakarta, Tuesday (22/03) becomes into anarchy and eventually clashed with online motorcycle taxi driver.

Actions from the drivers of the bird-logo taxi become violent and anarchic, stepping down on other taxis that are not willing to join the demonstration. They beat up online motorcycle taxi drivers and ended up throwing rocks at each other at the protocol street of Jakarta. Viral video showing drivers breaking other taxi’s windows because they’re not joining the demonstration spread rapidly on Youtube, as well as photo of a taxi driver with blue uniform posing with chopping knife on Facebook.

In society’s memory, all this time the drivers of the blue colored bird is known as professional, polite, courteous, have a helping hand and drive carefully. All the good things from the drivers’ works as the spearhead to promote company’s positive reputation and credibility that already been built for decades. It’s a pity that on that day, all the nobleness of character and credibility on their good service and politeness gone in seconds.

The blue taxi drivers that personally are polite and courteous, rational and aware, suddenly changes to violent and irrational when joining the mass. Their mind turns into collective mind. According to Gustave Lee Bond (1965) the collective mind has these following traits: impulsive, easily offended, aggressive, quick to act, easily washed by sentiment, less rational, suggestible, easy to imitate. If the management of the bird taxi is able to understand this since the beginning, probably they could manage to prevent the happening of collective mind between their drivers.

Then PR crisis happened. Fire struck the reputation and credibility of the blue taxi. I remember a quote from Warren Buffet, one of the world’s richest people, “It takes 20 years to build a reputation and 5 minute to ruin it.”

Statement from the spokesperson of the blue taxi on mass media and television right after the incident is a strategic step that is quite reactive in responding the crisis and provides both side of the story for the news. As a compensation for public outrage, the company decided to give free service for 24hr on the next day (23/3).

Timothy Comb in Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT, 2007), stated that one of the Crisis Response Strategy is Rebuild Crisis Response where company have to state their apology and that the company will take full responsibility of the condition happening as well as giving compensation to the victims or disadvantaged stakeholders.

Unfortunately, no words of empathy and apology come out on the press conference and exclusive interview in the television. In fact when a crisis occurs, apology is the most important thing that needs to be delivered in the first place, even have to be repeated again and again to state empathy because there are victims, no matter who is right or wrong. Sorry, sorry, and more sorry.

As a result instead of sympathy, society instead becomes antipathy. The antipathy was expressed through Memes of Angry Bird, portraying the blue giant bird that is angry amongst the traffic congestion in Jakarta.

It takes 20 years to build a reputation and five minute to ruin it.”

The brand logo that has the meaning of “The Bird of Happiness” changed to “The Bird of Angriness”. Bad image that already happens, society’s disappointment towards this famous brand of taxi is unable to be healed by the compensation of free service for 24hr. The initiative even results in mocks from nation’s netizens, at least twitter users that collectively tweets their complaints with #PercumaGratis. Kompas.com wrote that hashtag #PercumaGratis directed to the service of the blue taxi has become the third trending topic in Indonesia. According to several twitter users, policy of free service taken by the blue taxi is a wasted effort.

Timothy Comb add one more crisis handling to complete it, which is Bolstering Crisis Response, where company could remind again all the stakeholders about the positive reputation that has been built all this time. The blue taxi could do this, to remind people about its nobleness of the character and its credibility of an excellent, polite and courteous service. At the same time underlining that actually the blue taxi is also a victim of this crisis. Of course, this has to involve all the drivers as their best company ambassadors. If the spokesperson forgets to apologize, let them as company ambassadors to apologize directly to every passenger and to not discuss any longer about conventional taxi versus online taxi.

Managing reputation is not an easy job. Managing crisis is also not only about appearing in media without a comprehensive, precise and careful Public Relations strategy. Crisis could happen anytime, anywhere, and to anyone (Mitroff and Anagnos 2001: 20,21). No company, however strong financially, however good their reputation is that is immune to crisis (Regester and Larkin, 2005:142).

Crisis could happen anytime, anywhere, and to anyone

Because of that, let us reflect on ourselves. Be ready to handle crisis by having a crisis work plan and update it, to have a trained, always-standby crisis management team. Do not forget to always conduct training in testing the crisis work plan at least once a year, and preparing message draft as well as template for crisis standby statement. Include PR Agency to prepare, review, and train them before crisis really happened.

“Three major political parties in Jakarta’s Regional People’s Representatives Assembly agreed not to support independent candidates, namely PDI-P, Gerindra and Golkar”

However the three major political parties in Jakarta’s Regional People’s Representatives Assembly agreed not to support independent candidates, namely PDI-P, Gerindra and Golkar. Those three parties will build a large coalition to carry the pair of candidates from them. This is because the RI 1 is from DKI 1.

Previously there are polemics whether the gas plant will be built at sea or on land.

There are two things that underlie the decision of gas processing for the block that located at Arafura Sea using the land scheme, first that the government wants the local economy and the national economy could be affected from the Masela project development. Secondly, with this project the region around Maluku can also develop their constructions. Victory in the sea and in the land, sir.

Dok:Independent.co.uk

Shocking news came from the application Instagram. In March, Instagram officially introduced a new feature that will sort user’s feed based on uploads that were considered important by its users. This feature allows a sequence of photos and videos in feeds based on user interest in a piece of content, and no longer in real-time.

The average user skips 70 percent uploads of their friends in timeline.

According to Instagram, this is because the growth of the user base services is increasing. One netizen can follow hundreds of thousands of accounts and followed tens of millions of accounts. However, the average user skips 70 percent uploads of their friends in timeline.

In fact, the missing content probably is important and interesting. With this condition, the more uploads that flows, the more less probability that user will skip the content shared by their friends. It would be harder for brands to do free promoting.
